While often remembered as Kim Tolliver’s former husband and collaborator, Briggs was a formidable force in his own right — penning tracks like “Strung Out Over You” for The Dells and “You’re Driving Me Into the Arms of a Stranger” for Mavis Staples.

His songwriting work with Darryl Carter for Margie Joseph is still revered, but Defrost Me stands as a testament to Briggs’ own talent as a soulful, commanding vocalist.
