With Blues of Desperation, guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa set out to challenge himself and expand his signature sound. For the first time, he recorded exclusively with Tweed Fender amps instead of his usual Marshalls, and brought in two drummers – Anton Fig and Greg Morrow – to intensify the groove. Alongside bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra, and Mark Douthit, and powerhouse backing singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade MacRae, and Juanita Tippins, Bonamassa assembled a band of rare depth and energy.
The album’s 11 original songs, written in Nashville with acclaimed collaborators such as James House, Tom Hambridge, Jeffrey Steele, Jerry Flowers, and Gary Nicholson, span the full spectrum of Bonamassa’s artistry. From raw, traditional blues to towering rock anthems and delicate acoustic ballads, every track is infused with passion, virtuosity, and the extended solos and jams that fans cherish.
Recorded in just five days at Grand Victor Sound Studios (formerly RCA Studio A) in Nashville, the sessions were produced by longtime collaborator Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey), who once again pushed Bonamassa to new creative heights.
Blues of Desperation captures Bonamassa at his most adventurous and expressive, proving that even after decades at the top, he continues to redefine the possibilities of modern blues-rock.
