Classic seventies reggae music, the vocal album to Hudson’s equally classic dub set Brand. Hudson was one of the hot new young reggae producers in the business in the early seventies releasing some of the deepest tunes of the day on his Inbidimts and Mafia labels, among others, with artists such as U Roy, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, Dennis Alcapone and others. As well as producing, Hudson also recorded himself as a vocalist and cut classic, experimental albums such as Flesh Of My Flesh and Torch Of Freedom, as well as this rootsy set featuring tracks that made a big impression on the London sound system scene in raw dubplate form back in those days. The basic tracks were recorded in Jamaica at Randy’s, Channel One and King Tubby’s featuring the cream of Jamaican studio sessioneers; Sly, Fish Clarke, Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna etc, then brought to London’s Chalk Farm studio where Sid Bucknor overdubbed Ken Elliot’s synthesizer and Wild Willy Barrett’s slide guitar, to create this unique and essential album.

Triston Palmer aka Triston or Tristan Palma (born 1962, Waltham Park, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer/deejay. He has been active since the mid-1970s.*** Palmer was born in 1962 and grew up in the Waltham Park area of Kingston, and decided from an early age that he wanted to be a singer. He began by singing to the accompaniment of Soul Syndicate guitarist Tony Chin. His first recording was “Love Is A Message” for producer Bunny Lee when he was eight years old, which was followed by “A-Class Girl” for the Black Solidarity label, which was co-run by Palmer and Ossie Thomas. He came to the attention of producer/deejay Jah Thomas, who began a substantial association with Palmer with the track “Entertainment”, when Palmer was aged around 14. He made a major breakthrough with his performance in 1979 at the General Penitentiary Memorial Concert for Claudie Massop, which also featured Bob Marley. Palmer became a popular artist in the “singjay” style in the early 1980s. “Entertainment” was a Jamaican hit and he enjoyed further successes with “Water Bubbling”, “Spliff Tail”, “Raving”, and “Run Around Woman”. Palmer also worked with Linval Thompson, who produced his Joker Lover and Settle Down Girl albums, and later George Phang, Tony Robinson, Sugar Minott, Bunny Gemini, and Castro Brown. At one point in the early 1980s, Palmer had nine songs in Jamaica’s Top 40.

After forming a short-lived group called The Aliens with Barry Brown and Johnny Lee, Taylor recorded his first single, “Bad Man Comes and Goes” in 1975 for Ossie Hibbert. He gained exposure as part of Bertram Brown’s Freedom Sounds collective (along with other reggae artists such as Prince Alla and Earl Zero), releasing the hit single “Ethiopian Kings”, which led to work with Mikey Dread. He subsequently worked with a variety of producers in the late 1970s and early 1980s including Prince Far I, Ossie Hibbert, Prince Hammer, and Nigger Kojak. The debut album, ‘If Jah Should Come Now’, was issued in 1979, with ‘Where Is Your Love Mankind’ soon following in 1980.

The 1982 solo-album by founding member of Black Uhuru (alongside Ducky Simpson and Garth Dennis)! – Re-issue in original sleeve artwork! Produced by Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes, recorded and mixed at Channel One by Soldgie and Scientist, as backing band: The Roots Radics with horn section by Dean Fraser and Nambo Robinson, the regular back-up vocalist part is taken over by longtime friend & singer Gold. “Day To Day Living” includes the hit “‘I’m Not (Getting) Crazy” and the Roots Radics favourite cuts “Hog And Goat” and “Dice Cup”.

 AllMusic Review by Stephen Cook

“Featuring the excellent backing of the Roots Radics band, Don Carlos’ Day to Day Living includes ten self-penned, sophisticated roots-reggae cuts. With his slightly hoarse yet sweet vocals, Carlos takes on his usual topical mix of spiritual/Rastafarian themes, ghetto life, and dancehall culture, showing the kind of lovers rock and roots lyric blend also favored by contemporaries like Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown. Musically, Carlos alternates between the dimly lit, minimalist drum’n’bass backdrops on “Street Life” and “Hog and Goat,” and sunnier, bubbly organ and horn-driven cuts like “Hey Mr. Babylon” and “English Woman,” with the updated rock-steady cut “I’m Not Crazy” standing out in particular. While producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes (Barrington Levy, Eek-A-Mouse) supplies the album’s rugged but slick backdrop, Scientist delivers a spacious, dub-tinged mix. Special mention should also be made of Winston Wright’s tasty organ work throughout the set, and “Flabba” Holt and “Style” Scott’s rock-solid rhythmic support. As is the case with his Harvest Time record, Day to Day Living includes some of the best music Carlos released in the ’80s.”
