Released in 1973, James Brown’s The Payback was originally planned as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Hell Up in Harlem. Although the film ultimately rejected the music, the album went on to become one of the most celebrated works in Brown’s career and a cornerstone of funk history.

The revenge-driven title track, which reached #1 on the R&B charts, remains one of Brown’s most iconic songs and one of the most heavily sampled recordings in hip-hop and R&B production. Released in 1971 on Curtom Records, just months after Baby Huey’s untimely death at age 26, the album was produced by none other than Curtis Mayfield. It blends psychedelic soul, deep funk, and politically charged spoken word in a way that was years ahead of its time.

Featuring fiery tracks like Listen to Me, Hard Times, and Running, the album became a foundational influence on hip-hop and neo-soul artists decades later — with samples used by A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah, and Public Enemy.
