Ever wondered what Sabbath would sound like with Lemmy on vocals? Look no further. Bull Run’s only full-length album is a lost proto-metal treasure — heavy, raw, and bursting with acid-drenched energy from the early ‘70s underground.
Bull Run – [Self-Titled], originally recorded in 1971 and released by Peppermint, is a hidden gem of early heavy rock, drenched in fuzz, grit, and attitude. Think Black Sabbath meets Motörhead, filtered through a small-town Ohio acid haze. This is Bull Run’s only full-length album, and it’s a blistering example of proto-metal before the genre had a name.
Formed by Jimmy Conner and a trio of seasoned Youngstown musicians ready to move beyond cover bands and pop songs, Bull Run dove into original, heavier material — a raw, DIY sound that predated and paralleled the early heavyweights of doom and hard rock. The songs on this release showcase twisted rhythms, doomy riffs, and an aggressive energy that sounds like it could’ve come from the darkest corners of 1971 Birmingham — but was instead born in Ohio.
While many versions of Bull Run’s recordings have floated around over the years, this release represents the album Conner envisioned but never released — a complete, cohesive statement of intent from a band that never quite broke out of the local scene, but whose creativity and commitment to original music left a lasting mark.
If you’re a fan of heavy acid rock, early metal, or forgotten underground classics, this is a must-own. A rare and excellent record that bridges the gap between garage rock, doom, and early hard rock — rough, real, and entirely ahead of its time.
