This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is a high-quality, stereo, all-analog release, mastered by Kevin Gray directly from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal in Germany.
Originally released in 1974, Stepping Into Tomorrow stands as a fusion masterpiece from legendary trumpeter Donald Byrd and a highlight of his later years with Blue Note Records. Having joined the label in 1958 as a hard bop standout, Byrd evolved into a pioneer of jazz-funk and R&B fusion, playing a major role in shaping Blue Note’s sound in the 1970s.
Collaborating with visionary producer Larry Mizell, Byrd crafted a sophisticated yet accessible new sound—smooth, funky, and deeply melodic. This album, following the success of Black Byrd and Street Lady, features standout tracks like the title cut “Stepping Into Tomorrow” and “Think Twice”—both of which would later become influential samples for hip-hop icons including J Dilla, Madlib, and A Tribe Called Quest.
The album boasts a stellar lineup including saxophonist Gary Bartz, bassist Chuck Rainey, drummer Harvey Mason, and Fonce Mizell on vocals and keys. A landmark fusion release, this edition offers an audiophile listening experience true to the original recording.
