As Dr. John The Night Tripper, he was one of the revelations at the three-day Holland Festival in 1970 (the European equivalent of Woodstock). As a studio musician, he has played on hundreds of albums, from the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton to the Black Keys.

“City Lights” is probably one of Dr. John’s most overlooked overlooked recordings, which objectively seems almost incomprehensible given the quality of the session players, the cream of the crop of the New York City and New Orleans recording scene at the time. On drums is the great Steve Gadd, guitarist John Tropea and the horn section features David Sanborn, who plays several solos and in the background singers George Jones, Tammy Lynn and Alvin Robinson shine.

With Dr. John, the sound and vibes of New Orleans voodoo and Mardi Gras are ever present.
