Coltrane’s 1965 post-A Love Supreme classic, reissued as part of the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series. All-analog mastering from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith, 180g vinyl, QRP pressing, in a tip-on gatefold jacket with padded inner sleeve.
Recorded in 1965, shortly after the landmark A Love Supreme, The John Coltrane Quartet Plays was intended to be an album of standards—but evolved into something far more spiritually and musically expansive. The recordings include “Nature Boy”, “Chim Chim Cheree” (from Disney’s Mary Poppins), and two Coltrane originals: the fiery “Brazilia” and the reflective “Song of Praise”, a composition that anticipates the devotional tone of Coltrane’s later work.
This album holds a unique place in Coltrane’s discography: it was the final release by the classic quartet—with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones—issued during his lifetime.
