That Stubborn Kinda Fellow is the second studio album by Marvin Gaye, released on December 17, 1962, by Tamla Records, a subsidiary of Motown. This album marked a turning point in Gaye’s career, as he shifted from the jazz and crooner styles of his debut album to a more pop- and R&B-oriented sound, laying the foundation for his future as a Motown icon.

The album features several hit singles, including “Stubborn Kind of Fellow,” a playful, self-assured track that became Gaye’s first chart success, “Hitch Hike,” an energetic dance number that showcases his knack for catchy hooks, and “Pride and Joy,” a jubilant love song that became one of his early signature hits.

Gaye’s smooth, soulful vocals are complemented by the infectious melodies and tight arrangements crafted by Motown’s legendary in-house band, the Funk Brothers. The backing vocals from The Vandellas add an extra layer of charm and energy to the tracks.

That Stubborn Kinda Fellow is a snapshot of Gaye’s early artistry, blending youthful exuberance with the polished production and irresistible grooves that defined the Motown sound. The album set the stage for his ascent as one of the greatest voices in soul and R&B history, giving listeners an early glimpse of the talent that would later produce groundbreaking works like What’s Going On.
