Released in 1970, Cruel Sister marked a shift for Pentangle toward a purer, more traditional folk sound. Moving away from the polished production of their previous album with Shel Talmy, the band teamed up with renowned folk producer Bill Leader, whose raw, authentic style perfectly complemented Pentangle’s intricate musicianship and deep respect for traditional material.
Each track on Cruel Sister is a reinterpretation of well-known folk songs and ballads, imbued with the group’s distinctive interplay of acoustic guitars, double bass, and crystalline vocals. The highlight of the album is the monumental, side-long adaptation of “Jack Orion”, which unfolds over 18 minutes of shifting rhythms and instrumentation — a true showcase of Pentangle’s virtuosity and creative depth.
A haunting and timeless record, Cruel Sister stands as one of Pentangle’s most atmospheric and artistically daring works.
