The Dream Syndicate’s Medicine Show returns as a deluxe 4xCD box set with 42 tracks, including 29 unreleased recordings from 1983–1984. Featuring rare live shows, demos, rehearsals, radio sessions, plus a remastered edition of the original album. Also available as a standalone remastered LP.
The Dream Syndicate’s controversial yet enduring classic Medicine Show is finally given the definitive reissue treatment.
This deluxe 4xCD box set brings together a staggering 42 tracks spanning the years 1983–1984, with 29 previously unreleased recordings — a treasure trove of rare live performances, radio broadcasts, demos, and rehearsal tapes. Alongside it, the album is also reissued as a standalone remastered LP.
In 1982, The Dream Syndicate founded their own imprint, Down There Records, to release their debut EP (featuring the first versions of “When You Smile” and “That’s What You Always Say”). After signing with Slash for The Days of Wine and Roses, they became the first Paisley Underground band to join a major label (A&M), resulting in 1984’s Medicine Show. Unlike its predecessor — recorded in hours — this album took months to complete, with lineup changes and a mainstream producer shaping its haunting, psychological sound.
For this new edition, the Down There label is revived, distributed by Fire Records. The remastered album (from the original analog tapes) is accompanied by explosive live material that reveals the band at their rawest and most incendiary. For the first time, the complete WXRT radio broadcast appears from the original reel-to-reel master tape. Rehearsal and live tapes of Kendra Smith, captured just before her departure, add further depth to this fascinating archive.
Medicine Show may have divided critics upon release, but time has proven it to be a psychologically complex and essential record in the Dream Syndicate’s story. With this expanded reissue, its legacy finally gets the recognition it deserves.
