A lost gem of early ’70s underground rock, Universe captures the ambitious, heavy-blues-meets-prog energy of a Welsh power trio destined for cult legend. Guitarist Steve Finn, bassist John Healen, and drummer Rob Reynolds formed the band out of the ashes of Deep Blue Centre and Spoonfull, drawing influence from Cream, Hendrix, and John Mayall. By 1970, they had become Universe — a name echoing the expansive sonic vision they brought to the stage.

Known for their electrifying live shows, Universe played relentlessly across the UK and Europe, sharing bills with Jethro Tull, Yes, and Graham Bond. Their sole studio output — an album and single recorded in Norway in 1971 — reflects a band at the height of its powers, fusing raw blues-rock grit with psychedelic flourishes and melodic ambition on tracks like “Twilight Winter” and “A Woman’s Shape.”
