The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other is the second studio album by the British progressive rock band Van Der Graaf Generator, released on February 20, 1970. It marks the first album recorded with the band’s full lineup and signifies their transition to a more mature, dark, and experimental sound that established them as one of the most influential acts in the genre.
The album features unforgettable tracks such as “Refugees,” a poignant ballad celebrating hope and the search for a better future, the epic and intense “White Hammer,” which delves into the history of the Inquisition, and “Darkness (11/11),” the atmospheric opener with existential themes.
Led by Peter Hammill’s deep, dramatic vocals, the album showcases Hugh Banton’s commanding organ, David Jackson’s dynamic saxophone and flute work, and the solid rhythmic foundation provided by Guy Evans (drums) and Nic Potter (bass). Blending elements of progressive rock, jazz, and psychedelia, the album creates a unique sonic landscape.
The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other was praised for its originality and theatricality, solidifying Van Der Graaf Generator’s reputation as one of the most pioneering bands in the progressive rock scene of the 1970s. It remains a classic album, showcasing their ability to fuse music with poetry and philosophy in an unforgettable way.
