Featuring a young Don Henley (soon to rise to fame with The Eagles) on drums, the alt-country group Shiloh formed in the late 1960s while its members were still in college. In 1969, they crossed paths with Kenny Rogers, who encouraged them to head to Los Angeles to record their self-titled debut album. The record shines with three standout roots-rock tracks—“ Swamp River Country,” “Left My Gal in the Mountains,” and “Simple Little Down Home Rock & Roll Love Song for Rosie”—that evoke the earthy sound of The Band.

Meanwhile, Henley’s own compositions—“I’m Gone,” “Same Old Story,” and “God Is Where You Find Him”—offer an early glimpse of the melodic sensibility and lyrical themes that would later define the Eagles’ sound. A long-overlooked proto-Americana gem, rediscovered at last.
