Césaria Évora was a native of Cape Verde and was known as a famous exponent of morna, a mixture of West African percussion, Portuguese fado, Brazilian modhinas and British nautical songs.

After a brief singing career in the 70s, she returned to her classical style and new albums in the late 80s.

Her 1999 album “Café Atlantico” (a reference to a café in her home country where she began performing in front of audiences) is probably her best work and, in contrast to her previous, more Portuguese-influenced albums, takes Césaria Évora into Latin American musical territory.

Césaria Évora brings the best of Cuban and Brazilian music to this album, creating a melancholic, nostalgic and very emotional atmosphere.
