Recorded live in 1995 and originally released on CD in 2019, Big Band Voodoo finally makes its vinyl debut for Record Store Day 2026. This special edition is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide, pressed on double purple vinyl.

Ahead of a 1995 tour, Mac Rebennack shared this vision with his manager Stanley Chaisson—and soon after brought it to life in Cologne, Germany. There, he recorded 16 tracks with the legendary WDR Big Band, blending his unmistakable New Orleans groove with full big-band power. The recordings remained unreleased for years, until now.

The set opens with a thunderous version of “Indian Red,” name-checking Mardi Gras Indian tribes before erupting into a full second-line celebration. “New York City Blues” swings with enough swagger to light up Times Square, while “I’m Just a Lucky So and So” channels the Rat Pack-era glitz of Las Vegas.

Several tracks reinterpret material from Afterglow (1995), the album Dr. John was touring at the time, while moodier moments like “Gee Baby Ain’t I Good to You” add depth and contrast. Though not every track is a career highlight, this live set delivers exactly what the good Doctor intended: Big Band Voodoo.

An essential addition for Dr. John collectors and fans of New Orleans jazz, blues, and big-band soul.
