The Dark Saga (1996) is the fourth studio album from US heavy metal mainstays Iced Earth and one of the band’s most distinctive releases. It marks the debut of drummer Mark Prator, the final appearance of bassist Dave Abell and lead guitarist Randall Shawver, and the first collaboration with producer Jim Morris, who would go on to shape the band’s future sound.

Recorded in early 1996, the album is a full concept record inspired by Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, with the character also featured on the iconic cover art. Reflecting the narrative focus, The Dark Saga adopts a more melodic and streamlined approach, emphasizing atmosphere, hooks and storytelling over sheer heaviness.

While the stylistic shift divided some fans, the album was widely praised and has since become a fan-favourite for its cohesion and memorable songwriting, standing as a unique chapter in the Iced Earth catalogue.
