This is the record where everything began.

Rush’s self-titled debut captures the band in its rawest, most determined form—three young musicians betting entirely on themselves. Original drummer John Rutsey handles all drum duties here, laying down the thunderous foundation that drives the album’s hard-rock punch.

The first sessions took place late at night at Eastern Sound Studios, Toronto, under the direction of Dave Stock, chosen purely because the studio rates were cheapest after hours. Financing the recordings themselves, the band worked fast and efficiently—but not without second thoughts. Dissatisfied with the initial results, Rush regrouped, moved to Toronto Sound Studios, and took full control of production to achieve a stronger, clearer sound.

As Alex Lifeson later recalled:

“The first attempt at the album was done in eight hours after one gig… Then in November it was re-recorded in about three days, including mixing. We were lucky that most of the songs were in the can in two or three takes.” — Alex Lifeson, 1974

Rather than signing immediately to an established label, Rush formed Moon Records and pressed only a few thousand copies—making early editions of this album especially desirable among collectors. Fate intervened when Cleveland DJ Donna Halper (WMMS) championed “Working Man,” turning it into a cult radio favorite and ultimately bringing Rush to the attention of Mercury Records.

Musically, Rush sits firmly in early-’70s hard rock territory—loud, direct, and unapologetic—yet already hinting at the ambition and musicianship that would soon redefine the band’s sound.

A cornerstone debut, a piece of Canadian rock history, and an essential title for any serious Rush collection.
