A funk-soaked 1971 classic from legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and featuring a blazing cover of James Brown’s “Cold Sweat.” This 180-gram reissue is cut from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray, pressed at RTI, and housed in a high-quality tip-on jacket. A must-have soul-jazz essential with top-tier audiophile sound.
Purdie Good! captures legendary drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie at the peak of his creativity. Known as one of the most recorded studio drummers in history—and the mastermind behind the iconic “Purdie Shuffle” heard on classic recordings by Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan—Purdie steps into the spotlight with this soulful, funk-driven masterpiece.
Recorded in early 1971 at Rudy Van Gelder’s renowned Englewood Cliffs studio, the album carries all the sonic richness and precision associated with Van Gelder’s engineering excellence. The session blends three Purdie originals with three contemporary covers, highlighted by a fiery, hard-grooving rendition of James Brown’s “Cold Sweat.”
